What do the staff do?

The main role of the visiting support officer is to contact each resident according to their agreed individual support plan from Monday to Friday.

The visiting support officer will provide the following support:

  • All residents will have a support plan agreed with a staff member, which will identify the level of individual support required to help them live independently. This will be updated regularly.

  • Summon the appropriate help in an emergency by contacting relatives, doctors, social services or other professionals.

  • Ensure that buildings and equipment are kept secure and health and safety requirements are met.

  • Encourage and support residents to organise social activities and encourage community residents to join in.

  • Test the alarm system once a month to ensure that it is in full working order and that the resident understands how the equipment works.

  • Liaise with other organisations to ensure that the needs of our residents are met.

  • Ensure our in-house services are used e.g. tenancy support, money advice and occupational therapy.

  • The visiting support officer's working hours can vary from scheme to scheme. However, 24 hour emergency cover is provided through the emergency alarm system.

  • While the visiting support officer is off duty, or on leave, the call centre and a visiting staff member will provide cover.

The visiting support officer is unable to:

  • offer personal care to residents

  • administer medication

  • collect pensions, shopping or prescriptions.

However, in an emergency the visiting support officer will deal with most situations and will liaise with relatives or professional agencies to arrange the help you may need.
