Silver surfers star on TV!

Silver surfers in South Northamptonshire were stars for a day when the regional news television crew called in on their computer training session!

The group of Surfers, all South Northants Homes (SNH) retirement tenants, have been attending a ten-week course run by pupils at Roade School Sports College. The year 9 and 10 pupils provide one-to-one support for the Silver Surfers, teaching them skills such as surfing the internet, word processing and sending emails. This innovate inter-generational course has been so successful that the regional news broadcaster decided to pop by and film one of the sessions for their news bulletin!

The Silver Surfers project aims to help older people learn essential computer and internet skills, enabling them to perform tasks such as shopping online, emailing friends and family, and writing letters. SNH has also installed computers in each of its retirement schemes that can be used by tenants in the community.

Becky Pavey, SNH Community Development Manager said:

“The Silver Surfers project is a fantastic way for our retirement tenants to learn new IT skills and we were very pleased to welcome the television crew. Working in partnership with Roade School Sports College gives older and young people an opportunity to interact with a different generation. As a thank you, some of our retirement tenants have volunteered to help the pupils with their English school work.”
