Wednesday 13 May 2009SNH celebrate Silver Surfers Day
Retirement tenants of Northamptonshire-based social housing provider, South Northants Homes (SNH), get to go cyber surfing this Friday – as part of a national scheme to get older people using the World Wide Web.
Silver Surfers Day, taking place on 15 May, is a national event aimed at helping older people develop their IT skills. SNH and Roade School Community College are hosting a number of events on Friday, specifically for their retirement homes residents. Roade School will be throwing open their doors to SNH tenants, and year 9 pupils will be running free IT taster sessions to everyone who attends. Tenants will be able to learn skills such as internet browsing, shopping and emailing, and if they enjoy the sessions they’ll have the opportunity to sign up for a four week training course. This scheme is also part of SNH’s intergenerational project, aimed at forging links between older and younger people.
SNH will be holding smaller events around their retirement schemes. As part of their ‘Golden Oldies Go Surfing’ project, SNH have supplied each retirement scheme with a computer. On Friday, volunteers will be on hand in each retirement scheme to help tenants with their ICT skills.
Karen Roberts, Extended Services Co-ordinator, said:
"We are delighted to be hosting our first Silver Surfers event on behalf of the Salcey cluster of schools and South Northants Homes. We hope that the different generations will enjoy and gain from the experience. As part of our Extended Services provision, we hope that this event will springboard the development of other intergenerational projects, bringing our cluster schools and their communities together in a positive and innovative way."
Becky Pavey, SNH Community Development Manager said:
“We aim to get as many of our older tenants online as possible, so they can learn new skills and use the computers we’ve installed in our retirement schemes. Many tenants have mentioned that they’d like to use the computers to stay in touch with their family, shop online and plan their holidays. This is also the beginning of our ‘Golden Oldies Go Surfing project’ and there’s not a better time to promote this than on National Silver Surfers day.”
